Eger is so much nicer than Budapest--hardly any English but clean air, country charm and blue & sunny oct- type weather. Enough of a nip to let you know autumn is on the way, but a t-shirt and fleece is perfect.
Walked in the Bukk Hills past gurgling streams and waterfalls. Buckeyes dropping and popping open as they fell. In town, blue plum trees along the sidewalks. I picked a fallen one & ate it--so sweet & good.
Found jeans in eger. good fit + super price = happy camper.
Spent last evening in the Valley of Beautiful Women, tho the town signs all say "nice" women. Tasted lots of wine in the many cellars--no charge to taste. Brought my empty water bottle & they filled it with my choice: a Bikaver (bulls blood) that was smoother and less bitter than some others.
Learned the bitter/astringent taste is because of the limestone in the earth. The best I had was a merlot--
Surprise.
My neighbors at retur vendaghaz are 3 Polish college & post-college students. They shared their big plastic bottle of cabernet with me and we talked for an hour after I got in last night.
There's 1 Internet cafe & 1 inn with wifi--not mine. But the restaurant I ate in last nite in the valley has wifi!! So I'm here today for lunch. It's a very long walk, but worth it.
Must sto & order, then race back to town & the bus station. Am going to the Piac--open-air market--in Mezokovesd.
Return to Budapest tomorrow to do the museums and Margaret island.
I'll post again from there.
