The time is flying by & I'm staying up much too late. Friday's trip to the Danube Bend with Peter will be 1 of the trip's special highlights. We had a blast. He used his hu to eng dictionary & I borrowed his eng to hu dictionary. So we always managed to make ourselves understood.
The drive north from Budapest on the Buda and Obuda side of the Danube looks just like a drive through northern Calif--except for the style of houses, of course. Homes climb the hillsides, and the roadsides are thick with trees & other greens for privacy and to cut down road noise.
We were nearly to szentendre when Peter suddenly hit the brakes. There, atop some kind of metal utility structure, maybe 30' high was a storks' nest!!!! The storks are all in Africa by now, but we got pictures. I told him maybe Phil could photoshop
in the storks. :)
We toured two castle ruins in Visegrad, one dates to the 15 th century. And because one sits high on a hill, we saw an amazing panoramic view of the Danube. That's where I'm retiring--well, only if Hungary improves it paper products.
Best part of Friday was the outdoor ethnographic museum--a huge, fat windmill, curly sheep, and shaggy Hungarian cattle. Also homes from a century or more ago. Beds in every room.
Had dinner at peter's. His boys are all boy. And Hungarians really dote on their kids. The t- shirts were a hit. And oddly enough, Fulop, the 5yr old gave me a return gift--3 buckeyes! I had trouble explaining buckeyes and the osu buckeyes. When Fulop made his gesture, the problem was solved. Buckeyes are horsechestnuts in hu.
I think I saved this post, but I've lost another hour of sleep. I plan to go to the big Sunday flea mkt at 7 am in the city park.city park in hu is varosliget--"s" is pronounced "sh."
